Aquatro Gallery Hosts The Boston Comadres / August 2012

What a great time we had with the lovely ladies of the Boston Comadres, the regional group of latin women who are part of Las Comadres. Las Comadres was created by Latin women for Latin women to lend support and to develop networks professionally, both in their communities and nationally. It’s great to feel their energy and their excitement about exploring new places and being with old friends. We are grateful they decided to spend the day with us – it’s good for the soul!

One of our newest hand-painted textiles to land in the gallery is Guatopo Design’s 36-inch square large silk bandana done by artist, Adriana Mederos. Scroll through the images here to see the bandana as it was being completed.

Part of a collection of hand-painted fabrics done by a freehand-drawing method, this textile is a sample of what Guatopo is calling their “Sketchbook Collection” where they use all of their original patterns and authentic style to build a library of visual ques. This a bold, spirited composition, and yet the color palette is quite harmonious and truly ties the different areas together. Notice in the image above how the gutta (resist) is clearly visible on the surface of the silk!

Now finished, the large bandana is on view at Aquatro Gallery and is for sale. Aquatro invites you to stop by and ask to see it as it does require help in displaying it properly. We’re glad to do it because it is really magnificent!

Aquatro Gallery – Contemporary Fine Art in Gloucester MA

Contemporary fine art painting by artist, Adriana “Gigi” Mederos

With all of the new hand-painted textiles, jewelry and fashion accessories, it might be easy to forget that the walls at Aquatro Gallery are surrounded by the fine art work of Adriana “Gigi” Mederos. Featuring artworks on paper and canvas, Gigi shows a mature painting style that often  incorporates printmaking and stamping into her lush colorful compositions. So lush, that they often take on characteristics of skin, or landscapes, even of microscopic life. This dichotomy of macro and micro is often found in her work.

Regardless of the strata she paints on, Mederos primarily uses acrylic medium in her work. Her technique with the acrylics is quite sophisticated – viewers often remark the paintings seem like oils. In part, this is because of Mederos’ brightly-colored choices in her compositions, but it’s mainly due to her ability to paint with finesse and touch; layering colors, feathering edges, while losing none of the density of the color.

Things To Do In East Gloucester MA – Aquatro Gallery

Artist Gigi Mederos displays some of her hand-painted textiles at the Grand Opening

Seemed like a good place to land this wonderful photograph taken of Gigi Mederos during the Grand Opening as she displays one of her hand-painted scarves. This particular scarf, the deep blue with the imaginative floral pattern and the gorgeous brown scarf behind her on the wall with the sand dollars are two of my absolute favorites. So simple and yet the true craft of the hand-painted pattern in the resist and the overlays of hand-mixed and painted color really come through. Adriana Mederos has a real gift for this medium and it comes through loud and clear.

This Season’s Smash Hit At Aquatro Gallery In Gloucester MA

Fridge magnets made with fine art encased in glass from Guatopo Design

IceBox Bling are little fine artworks encased in glass. From Guatopo Design.

Deep in the winter months of February and March, StevieB and Gigi at Guatopo came up with a new product for their store this summer. Who knew that it would turn out to be such a hit! The product, IceBox Bling, has been selling well during the first three weeks of the summer. Made from antique glass cabochons and new brass bezels, in between are sandwiched little pieces of artist Adriana Mederos’ abstract works on paper – none of them measure longer than 2 inches!

Like tide pools that have been captured, every one of them is like a mini snow-globe – without the snow. Backed with tiny, powerful magnets that snap tight to metal surfaces, this fridge bling will not come loose, drop your messages or lose your memos! So toss out those greasy, old tide chart magnets and upgrade to some super-blingy fine art magnets with our IceBox Bling. Available in multi-colors – one size fits all. For young and old.

GUATOPO – Entirely New & Authentic Designs For Textiles

silk painting demo by artist Adriana "Gigi" Mederos

In-process photo of artist Gigi Mederos painting a silk scarf – from 2012

We thought it would be worthwhile to post some in-progress photos of silk scarves in the making. Above, is a shot that shows Gigi Mederos painting the first coat of blue paint. In this photo, you can still see the gutta that she painted on the fabric first. Like using wax as a barrier in the batik technique, gutta, a water-soluble resist,  acts as a barrier and keep one color from running into another. You’ll also notice the frame she’s using which she designed and built herself. Works better than commercially-available models!

Close-up of artist Gigi Mederos working close up to the scarf – from 2012

Photograph #2 shows the artist working extremely close to the surface of the scarf. Even though the gutta provides a barrier, if you want to keep one area clean from another, you do have to be careful. The scarf she is working on here is approximately 8 inches wide by 4 feet long and the colors she’s working with here are mixed by the artist herself.

Birds-eye view of artist Gigi Mederos painting her newest silk scarf – from 2012

In this shot from above, you can see the entire dashboard of her working area in the studio – also getting a nice view of the tension system on the frame she works with on the silk panels. These shapes were taken directly from stamps that Gigi carved over the winter from 2011-2012. The stamps were enlarged and either used as single images or in stamped patterns as seen here.

Photograph #4 is a detail of the finished scarf. There are still steps to the process left to be done – like washing out the gutta and ironing the scarf, but the design and the painting is finished here. This is one of my favorite scarves she has done to date because it feels like an extremely contemporary kuba cloth. To see more of her work, stop by during the Grand Opening of Aquatro Gallery, Friday May 25th, from 6-9 p.m. Memorial Day weekend.

Hand-Painted Textiles for Aquatro Gallery

Detail of hand-painted silk scarf - by Adriana "Gigi" Mederos - from 2012

Gigi’s been very busy the last few weeks – hand-painting silk scarves – and lots of them. She also painted a gorgeous tie for me to wear to my opening at the Boston Public Library – I felt like a million bucks wearing it! So I thought I’d give everybody a little taste of what’s to come when we open in a month or so…,

Okay, so here’s a peek at the men’s tie she painted for me. Trust me when I tell you it went fabulous with a dark pinstripe suit. And the golden / burnt umber grid painted in the middle of the tie is a wonderful surprise for the wearer because no one else really ever sees this little bit! Nice touch…,

Also, save the date – official opening on Memorial Day weekend. Stay tuned here for more updates and hours for the long weekend. We’re excited about the new season and about seeing all of you again soon!
